Introducing Freyja Garbett! Our incredible piano teacher here at Sister's Of Sound. Hailing from the tiny coal coast town of Otford, Freyja's diverse music career has seen her move far and wide, but we are so happy she's settled back here in the Illawarra with us!

Freyja has experience playing and teaching a myriad of musical genres, including Jazz and contemporary styles. She holds a BA from Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, where she majored in performance and jazz composition. In recent years, Freyja has been composing and producing music that combines electro-acoustic sonic palettes with improvisation. Freyja has previously gained commissions by SIMA and APRA AMCOS to compose an extended work for a ten-piece jazz ensemble. From this commission emerged her regularly gigging Septet. This band recorded her debut album ‘Maya’ released on Art as Catharsis Records in November 2019. Freyja has worked as a session musician with an eclectic array of artists including those such as Stella Donnelly, Touch Sensitive, Matt Keegan, Mia Rodriguez, Liyah Night, and many others. Freyja is currently based between the Illawarra and Sydney, and we feel so lucky to have her part of this community, in helping to inspire and encourage women in the music industry. Learn about Freyja's most recent project, 'Music From The Waves'.

Music from the Waves is a multi-movement suite combining electro-acoustic sonic palettes to encapsulate the synthesis between Freyja Garbett’s two great loves; music and surfing.

The physical, mental and emotional link between musical improvisation and surfing are concepts that have long been pondered by musicians and lovers of waves. Many surfers have drawn a philosophical connection between these disciplines. This is the first step in Freyja’s journey in creating music that encapsulates and audiates the synthesis between music and surfing.

Featuring Sandy Evans on saxophones, Freyja on piano, synthesis and vocals, Maximillian Alduca on double bass and Miles Thomas on drums, these ambient, and rhythmically complex compositions empower the band to drastically manipulate the music live on stage. Each performance is fresh and invigorating.
